Hi, I curently have a 660 and a 430 running 3 and 2 80w bulbs. Should I have glass on the lid of the tank to reduce any UV getting into the tank or is this not needed
Unless you are running UV lamps, the glass wall of the fluorescent lamp blocks most of the UV produced inside the lamp.
Of the lamps we've tested for UVA & UVB, the better actinic lamps do produce more UV output, and a better esthetic look. The water will filter out most of what gets through and as found in the Oceans, a UV component in the light is a natural event.
Here's what I found on GE's website for more details. http://www.gelighting.com/na/business_lighting/faqs/health.htm#5
