I am looking to get one of these and because I am not running it in a closed loop, I was wondering how to handle back siphoning to sump for these units. Thanks.

My outlet is just below the water surface, just like a normal return.

Just screw it onto your tank and connect a flexible hose between your original return pipe and its input. The outlet is properly set as is.

The only caveat, which is labeled all over it, is be careful when installing and removing the nozzle. You will have an electrical plug for it, plenty of cord to get to a floorbased power strip. And that's about it.

Hint: connect the hose to your unit with a plastic c-clamp, and don't try to use the black ribbed hose: I suspect the original is metric, or some such, but no amount of force or heating would get that black hose onto the intake. Do that one first. I used plain clear siphon hose. Then connect to your return pipe. You may need a screw-on adapter.

If the return pipe hose should come off, the worst it will do is shoot water across your tank. If the Swirl hose attachment comes off, it will be wildly whipping inundation. C-clamp that one securely.
