The darn impeller kept rattling
turned out it was a broken (ceramic) shaft as well as a well worn part.
I cut a spacer (like a washer) out of a piece of plastic air-supply line; to keep the blades from scraping on the housing cover when re-assembled,
and then set to work replacing that ceramic shaft.

I found a BAMBOO skewer in the kitchen drawer (love the kitchen drawer for loose crap!),
got out the belt sander and, spinning it carefully across the surface, sanded it down to a size just larger than the ceramic shaft.

I figured if the plastic is worn and the broken shaft isn't, why not replace the shaft with something a bit larger?

So there it is--- bamboo replacing ceramic and it's been working for a month now and, guess what?
It's QUIETER than it was new, if that's indeed possible...
