I am setting up a 55g and was originally setting it up with dual Backpaks and a couple extra powerheads. I don't like the noise (vibration) it makes an and was considering a sump instead. that is what I did with my 75g at home. My question is, I have a 10g. Is this big enough to make into a sump. I know that I will have to be cautious with powerfailures and overflows, but should I be looking at a 20g? I just have limited space in trying to get it under the tank.

10 gallon should be fine. Just make sure to put some baffles. You should check out your overflow first though.

Put the overflow into the tank and see what the water level is normally and what it will be when the water is gone( the bottom of the teeth).

Next drain out 5 gallons into a bucket. If the water level is below the teeth of the overflow you are fine for a 10 gallon that is half full as a sump. If the water level is not below the teeth, get a larger sump and avoid the stress.

I was stressed out when i unplugged my system for the first time as a test run.
