View Full Version : How often do you guys feed your aggressive tanks?
I'm debating on how often I should feed my aggressive tank. I would really like to feed it once every other day but I don't want to starve my Humma. I had allot of trouble w/ algae on my last setup and think part of the problem was feeding too much food twice a day. So, how often do you guys feed? TIA.

I feed mine every 2 or 3 days. All my fish are Big (no less than 10 inches) meat eaters. I feed them whole shrimp, big chunks of codfish, whole smelts, and my Bumblebee grouper eats 8 inch yellow croakerfish. I've been on this schedule for about a year, no one is starving and algae is not an issue in my tank.
I also noticed that my eels never go on a hunger strike this way. When I was feeding everyday, they would sometimes not want to eat for weeks.
It depends on the fish. If they are sloppy carnivores (triggers, puffers, groupers, eels, etc.) and they are healthy and fat, not feeding everyday is a good thing.

i have only really kept lions in my time, i have always fed mine small meals daily...some think this is over feeding but we have had a volitan for 9years now on this routine, a radiata for 6 years and a 5 year antennata. only algae problem i have had is when i had my zebra eel he left to much mess and i couldnt keep clean up crew what so ever
I think I will try and feed my new Humma twice a day and everything else either once a day or every other day. The only reason the Humma will get special treatment is because I just got him from the LFS and he is malnurished. Thanks for the responses and if anyone else wants to chime in, feel free.

small amounts of flake and pellets a few times during the day . then I toss in some frozen mix or chopped shrimp at night. If I'm feeling mean i toss it in whole and watch they steal it back and forth . My SFE eats every night . I have a small algea problem but oh well it scoops out easy enough . I think this is my secret to keeping snails and crabs in the tank . as well as smaller fish .

EDIT: theres always some nori in there to munch on as snacks amazingly the triggers eat it more than the tangs do.

I feed 2 cubes of shrimp every day, but I put a little in at a time.

I feed my fish a ton! 6-7 sheets of high quality seaweed sheets a day. I then feed mix flake 2 times a day. For my Large Angels I add 1 chunk of Hikari Mega Marine Angel formula. I also mix up the daily feedings with other foods like Phytoplankton, Mysis, and Cyclops etc.
Once my tank shows it can handle the bioload I will feed more. Now, w/ the addition of the new fish, my param's are spiking while the bacteria catch up. Hopfully it won't take long. I'm testing daily to see.
Thanks for the replies. It's helping me to understand the boundaries for my tank.

If you don't already have one get a fuge. Allows you to feed the fish properly(Not starve them like alot of people do). Many ocean going fish eat all day long, everyday(angels, butterflies, tangs, damsels, clownfish, wrasses) It's not fair to these fish to feed every couple days. Alot of other fish probably eat less often(triggers, groupers, puffers) and probalbly bigger meals when they do. I feed once or twice a day everyday with a variety just to cover all the bases. With a fuge and a once a week water change I never have algae issues.
