Do you have one to replace? If so the first place to check is the ballast OEM. IF they don't have it, try IceCap (I think they used to repair ballasts and have a decent stock). McMaster is also a good place to look.

The electronics supply houses (Allied, digikey, Farnell, Newark, etc) will have them, but they will be pricey for what you are looking for.

If you post the specs, we can help you find one (hopefully for a few bucks). You need to at leat match the voltage rating on the cap, but higher is fine. The cpacitance rating should be within 10% or so of what you are replacing. The sad joke is most cheap caps that are found in these units are 20% tolerance (and some as bad as 50%).

Agreed , there is a voltage rating along with the microfared rating on the Cap.

I had a hell of a time trying to replace some cap's on a m57 ballast. I ordered several from some of the supply houses , using the exact info on the cap, and got back tiny pcb board style capacitors, not oil filled or similar.

I called a shop local and they had one, and wanted $40 for it. PFFT.

I ended up contacting advanced and they sent me replacements for free.

Might be something worth looking into.

good luck.

I'm not an expert at electronics, but I would never imagine using anything that wasn't atleast in OEM specs.

It's not worth saving a few bucks.

best to order from an reputable dealer. all electronic componets are "not" created equal. cheap componets = subpar performance = reduced longevity. this is a huge subjective matter that depends on many parameters including the type of electronic appliance in question. but for a higher end device or someone that wants dependability, ie: hospitals etc... quality should win out over cost on individual componets. this is not a user opinion, just a fact.

Patty, I think the last poster was very clear. Go buy the cheaper eBay one, and risk a premature failure due to low quality. Worst case, you end up having to repair it again, or maybe it burns the place down.

You're in the wrong hobby if saving $2.00 means taking such a risk.

Ok las time I checked I thought GE was a decent brand oh and it wasn't only 2 bucks it was more like 10 to 15 and when your wife would get great pleasure out of flushing your whole tank down the toilet and smashing the glass with a hammer every dollar counts and if your wondering where I get 10 to 15 dollars the capacitor at newarkinone may only be like 8 bucks but they have a 25 dollar minimum oder plus shipping and the GE one was $15.00 dollars shipped from ebay.

Any eletrical supply store. you will not find them at home depot or lowes it has to be where electrical contractors get there supplies

No need to get so defensive, this post has generated enough to make a sound decision.

It sounds to me you just need someone to tell you what you want to do is the right thing to do.

I would say shop around a bit. I spent 15 seconds on Google and found this, $7.65
http://www.alliedelec.com/Search/SearchResults.asp?SearchQuery=37FB4410&Submit=find+it%21

If you have to, order several or find someone else who needs similar and group an order. If you want or need to go cheap, I think most people are just suggesting that you not go cheap on something electrical...

And honestly, the day my wife really tells me what I can and can't spend my money on is the day I tell her what she can/can't buy with her money. I think most married guys all fal into the same 'in' joke when we joke about our wives that they control the pocketboot, but for others it may be more reality than joke I guess.

If its really that bad, then its time to cut the losses and trade Wife v1.0 for Girlfriend V2.0 with the '06 hood scoop :)

I am not saying I want to buy the cheapest one I can find I want to find something that is resonable in my opinion buying a part for $25.00 when I payed $40.00 for the whole ballast is kind of extreme. Which is why I wanted to know if the GE type capacitor was an ok buy I know you don't want to skimp on electrical components I am not an idiot I just wanted to know if it was the right type of capacitor not if it was the greatest quality capacitor.

My wife on the other hand just feels there are better ways to spend money than on my stupid fish tank she just thinks extra money should go towards fixing up around the house or things of that nature not for $25.00 light parts when she thinks the PC's that I had to hook back up look just fine.

I understand, don't get too bent. I'm with the other guy though and it read to me more like you were looking to go cheap. Sometimes rebuilding is almost as expensive as buying new, which bites.

My wife just abought a new Murano, so I've got the next 2-3 years to blow my hobby cash just waiting for her to open her mouth :)

The GE will be fine. That is what 2 ballasts I used to have came with. But they were 10 years old and the ballasts were no good.

pics of them in my gallery.

the first link you listed for a "mallory" capacitoris a reputable manufacturer and dealer.

Ok I finally found one and from a reputable dealer Hellolights now carries replacement capacitors the only problem is they don't show any specs they just say here is a capacitor for 175w m57 ballast is it safe to assume that this is safe to use or should I try to get the specs.

nebraskareef
06/01/2006, 12:53 AM
Yes, They are all pretty much going to be the same tolerances. When I was on my capacitor hunt, HelloLights weren't carrying them. I would have ordered them from HL without blinking.

I know I have looked at there website a 100 times and just noticed the link for magnetic ballast DIY parts clicked it a there was a whole list of them it is only about 7 bucks cheaper than a couple other places but 7 bucks is 7 bucks and I trust HL so win win thanks for everyones help and for keeping me from being an idiot and buying the used one a week ago cause it is only like 2 bucks cheaper and it was used.
