Well I just set up my 125 gallon about 2 weeks ago and I spotted a small mantis shrimp in the tank already. This is my second hitchhiking mantis in the last 5 months. Those little buggers are always invading my tank. I guess I am going to leave him in there and hope he behaves. I just hope my cleaner shrimp is going to be OK. Maybe he'll go for the small hermits and snails first since there are so many of them anyways. Plus I am going to try and feed him a lot so he doesnt get hungry. Maybe one day I'll catch him.

Have you tried a glass cup and a piece of shrimp?

Feeding him won't work. They're like sharks, they live to eat and they eat all the time! If you can, get him out of there! Good luck.

I am going to try and figure out which rock he lives in and take that rock out and catch him. I have cought one before in my 50 gallon. I won the first battle and gave him away. Looks like I have to prepare for another battle. Hopefully I will be 2 for 2. Wish me luck. I'll give him to ya.

You can put a dottyback in your tank. DOttybacks eat mantis shrimp.

I've never heard of a Dottyback eating a Mantis shrimp. I've never heard of ANYTHING eating a mantis, I thought they were at the top of the crustacean food chain! lol

I found out which rock he lives in. I am going to take the rock out and put it in the fuge for now. Hes only about an inch long.

put the rock in fresh water and he will come right out

Get a tall glass drinking glass (or a tall shot glass). Put a piece of thawed shrimp (the kind you get from the grocery store). Then just lean it up against the rock close to where he stays.

Overnight, he should climb down into the glass.. but since he has no traction on the glass, he can't climb out.

i dont know- the mantis may sit there, analyze the glass texture, inspect traction capabilities, and plan escape routes prior to venturing in IF he's stupid enough...... lol

so why is it so difficult to catch a mantis shrimp? I keep hearing about how it is impossible to catch them, but it just seems like it would be just about as difficult as catching anything else that moves. I am curious as I have never seen one, or know anything about them.
