I recently went ahead and chopped up one of my toadstoal leathers like people say to do it. I cut the top of leaving some of the steam, and then went ahead and cut the top into four pieces. They are now just sitting on top of some eggcrate in my prop tank. I tried to glue them to some rocks with no avail, and also tried using rubber bands but they just cut right though the mushies. So I am left with just the four tops sitting on the eggcrate. I am wondering if this is ok, and will they still grow and produce a steam. Right now they look great, polyping and everything. They even seemed to have grown a little bit too. I'm just worried that they won't attach to anything. So how long does it take for steams to form and what does it look like if anyone has any pics.

If you are concerned that they might fall off, I like to use fish netting or vail. Put the frag on a rock and place te netting or vail over it loosly so the frag stays in place, but stil has room to open.
Take a rubberband and rubberband each side of the rock to hold the netting or vail down. The frag will attach within 4 to 5 days depending.

First the frag will attach to the rock, then it will start to grow the stem. That can take 2 to 3 weeks.

I attach all my sarcophytons by sewing them to rubble with nylon thread. I only have to stick it through the frag and loop it around the rock twice, then tie it off. They attach w/in days. I've tried veil and rubberbands as well, they don't work as well for me because as you said, the rubberbands just cut through, the veil seems second best but doesn't allow very much room for expansion, also the netting usually traps detritus.

Jme. :)
