Hi,

I just bought this new Red Sea Prizm protein skimmer from the LFS today and have a problem where the inlet will not reach the water line in my sump (about another 6 inches is required).

I connected a tube to the end of the inlet thinking this may resolve the issue however it did not work as the pump which is built in to the skimmer was not powerfull enough to suck the water up the extended length.

I have never been happy with this sump since I got it and I wouldnt mind getting a whole new one. However I do not know what are good designs and which arent.

I am going to try and get a refund for the skimmer tommorow, however I do not know if this will be possible as I had water going through it in various attempts to get it working.

I welcome all suggestions on a better setup/skimmer or if someone knows a way to get it working. I know this isnt the best skimmer around but I chose it because its size and design suited my space limitations.

I have 100g fish only marine setup.

Thanks, Michael.

Can you slow the flow from the return pump back into the tank with a valve or a tee? This should raise the water in the final chamber of your sump. Also what was the $ of the skimmer you bought from the LFS? You might be able to buy an insump one for the same price or less at an online vendor. If I were using that sump I would take out the bio balls and filter floss and put in a macro algae but thats my opinion, other may have a different one.

Nait002 has a point about the filter floss and media. IMO it may be restricting water to enter the sump which may be the problem. However, for your skimmer I think you should try to use a clear vinyl piece of tubing to create a lower suction inlet. If this doen't work out, return the skimmer for a in-sump type or replace your return pump for less flow...save some money and do a little experimenting have fun and good luck with your sump issue.

UPDATE: The LFS is going to take the Prizm back and give me a refund.

Looking for a suitable skimmer now, I do want to take the bio balls out eventually, just not sure what to replace that section of the sump with. Some have suggested a matrix ?? not sure what that is.

Well ive ordered a Tunze 9010,, should be getting it tommorow. It sounds like it is a pretty good skimmer from what I have read on these forums. Will let you know how it goes.

Michael.

Just setup my new Tunze skimmer, it was fairly easy to setup, seems to be producing foam. Although the foam isnt brown and isnt rising yet, but apparently there is a 'run in' period of up to 3 days. We shall see how it goes.

I have decided I am going to design a new sump with a refugium. Have been looking at melevs desings:

Im sure of them will be suitable, just have to figure out how I can fit it into my cabinet. I think the middle beam between the two sets of doors is helping to support the weight of the tank :(
