Does anyone know how well (or not) a purple tang will get along with a convict tang in a 90 gallon reef tank? The purple tang is still young and has been in the tank for a few months. I want to add a young convict to help with algae control. Any advice?

i am not the tang police. I think a 90 would be to small for a convict. I have a couple friends who have convicts and they are very very active swimmers. remember just my opionion.

why not try a kole, they are a great fish and smaller then most of the tangs.

I have a purple tang in my 90 gallon. I am also not the tang police but I think a 90 gallon is to small for a convict. Especially if you want a purple tang in thier to. Just go with the purple tang.

Thank you both very much. I probably would have said the same thing. However, my purple tang is not turning out to be a big algea eater, which is why I got him. I saw the convict at my lps, and he is eating up a storm. What would you do after trying all other things that are possible for controlling algae. This might be too general a question. Perhaps the young purple will learn to eat it. Thanks, again.

How about putting a lawnmower blenny in oyur tank. Those things are algea eating machines.

your tank sorry about that

Is a lawnmower blenny the same as an algae blenny? If so, I've heard that some turn out to be and some don't. I guess I'll just have to try, although I already have an orange striped blenny. Not sure if that's a good idea either. What do you think?

The kole sounds great, although I'd have to give up my purple tang. I had a chevron tang in my 46 and had to give him up to a 220 tank. I was happy for him, but sad for me. I never had an algae problem and he kept the tank so clean. Would the kole be similar?

mabey I wouldn't give up the purple tang. I think a lawnmower blenny would be the way to go.

You're right. My last question, though, is a "police" question again. Would you do the lawnmower with my orange stripe? They are very different looking from each other, but they are still 2 blennies in a 90 gallon?

In my opinion, adding a second tang will only make your algae problems worse (nutrient issues).

LMB's are very, very hit or miss. If you can find one that eats prepared foods, it's a hit.

Yeah you could. a 90 gallon is big enough to hold two blennys. Escpecially since they dont look a thing like each other.

Jimmys right. Go to your LFS and put a lownmower blenny on hold. Ask them to feed it and see if it eats. If it eats and it has been on hold for a week, its a good one.

Thank you very, very much. This has been a big problem. I will do just that and see if my lfs has a good one. I will keep you iinformed. And hgbarwick, thanks for seeing me through the Tang discussion. I think that I almost made a big mistake. Bye for now.
