What's up guys. I've got a 30 gal. Nano that has been running for about 15 months now and just recently there has been diatoms showing up on top of my sand. The wierd thing is that they go away at night and about an hour after my actinics turn on in the morning they pop up again. I have two 600 and one 400 maxi-jets circulating plenty of water and an Exacalibur protein skimmer. I am currently using RO/DI water, so there are very little phosphates in the water. I am running two 96 watt PC's, for about 12 hour cycles and keep the moonlight on all night. My pH is 8.5 when my lights shut off. Salinity, Calcium, Temperature, and Alkalinity are all within acceptable ranges. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get rid of this stuff. I heard that these algae blooms come and go in cycles sometimes. I know that it is not really that bad for the tank, but it just ****es me off.

Try cutting back on your lighting schedule, have you changed your bulbs lately, if they start to go out of spectrum the algae will really take off, that happened to me.

I just got new bulbs in Feb. I will try cutting back on the lighting and see if it works.

Thanks James
