Sand sifting star is falling apart

My sand sifting star fish is still alive, but starting to fall apart. What should I do and what could have caused this? I have had it for over a year with no problems. Everything else in the tank seems to be doing fine.

Its too late. He has starved to death. I wouldn't replace it if it were me, they are hard on sandbed fauna as they only eat live things and not detritus.
