I'm about to buy a 140g tank (28" tall) and want enough light to keep mainly softies, some LPS and easy SPS. I also live in CA, so want a cheaper route, rather than straight MH.

I'm thinking of placing one 250w MH in the middle, and T-5 in addition as they are low heat and low cost.

I've only ever used MH alone or PC, never having used VHO or T-5 lighting before.

Suggestions welcomed !

i think that MH will be your best option, as you will need at least a 6 or 8 bulb T5 stup to get to the bottom of your tank, why not 150's ? with some actinic T5. that way youll be able to keep softies on the bottom and sps higher up.

Thanks for the reply. Where in SA are you from ? I'm a born and raised Vaalie ! Small world ! :)

My only reason for not wanting the MH's as my main lighting is the cost and heat issues (more so the cost - electricity in CA is EXPENSIVE !!!!)

Anyone else have some ideas ?
