View Full Version : Drift wood?

Anyone use drift wood in their reefs? I know a lot of ships run aground on reefs and sink, ultimately becoming a home for the reef denizens.

I think it would be fun to make a reef a little more dynamic.

I was also considering putting an old 40's diving helmet in my reef (great hiding places) but I'm worried about the brass content.

I've never seen a marine tank with it in it.

uh....no, i think it's the volume of water in the ocean that allows wood to do well, in your tank? nah, I wouldn't but it may be worth a shot, if you try then keep us updated on the progress, i would love to know how it turns out.

One member here Paul B has some bottles, anchor chain and possibly other odd stuff.

Would be very interesting to see how it did. I know that pier pilings are covered with marine life. I would worry about the wood discoloring the water more than anything but some carbon should clear it up. Also if you have ever moved a piece of wood on the bottom you will be amazed at the amount of micro life living under/in the wood. Seems like it would be a good hiding place for pods/worms.

Here's (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=727454&perpage=25&pagenumber=2) a thread about the tank, he mentions the chain at the top of page 2.

I'm strongly considering a diving helmet or miniature 1/4th scale diving helmet in my reef.

Can anyone comment on what the brass content might do to my tank?

start to break down and add copper to your tank, which will wipe out all the inverts.

i wouldn't add an organic like wood... over time it would release tannins and tend to drive the ph down. that's one reason why fw keepers often add wood to a habitat that requires a lower ph.

Interesting. I didn't know that! Thanks.

Wood is really no good in a reef. It rots and adds a lot of organics. I have tried it a number of times. Brass will killl everything in your tank in a short while.
