View Full Version : Does this look strong enough to hold a 90G?

I just drew this up pretty quick... I had this in mind for a stand.
38" tall, 4x4 legs w/ 2x4 frames and braces and the center cross brace. I was planning on using 3/4" plywood for a top and the floor inside, then siding it with some sort of finish wood.
It looks overbuilt to me which was the intent.... what do you guys think?

Yes, it looks strong enough. Looks like it could actually hold a small vehicle...:D

Yeah... I thought I overdid it, but I don't want to come home to everything on the floor. The only question I have then is the screws to hold it together. Is there a recommended size and/or length? I was thinking like 3 1/2".

lol, i'm doing about the same thing in longer scale for my 125. The AGA stand it's on disgusts me (held together with staples and glue). I'm doing 4x4 corners and middle, the rest will look virtually identical. for screws i'm actually doing lag bolts as I don't even want to give the thing a second thought

Would you need legs in the center for support of the middle?

I have a similar stand I built. I knotched the 4X4 to have the 2X4 frame rest on a solid base. I does cut douwm on the incursion into the area of a right or left sided drilled overflow. If you don not wish to kntch the 4X4 then perhaps a 2X4 on each side to support the frame the tank in on. By the way this was for a glass tank. For acrylic you will need to have sheet goods to support the entire tank bottom.

Good luck

My 90G sits on a stand made of 3/4" Oak plywood. Not a single 2 x 4 in it. A little bracing on the top is all.

Mine is also glass.
rather than notch the 4x4s (I don't have the means to do it), I just added a pair of 2x4s to the corners, basically making 6x6s. My only concern is the overflow bulkheads in the bottom. How wide does the stand actually need to be so it doesn't interfere? I was thinking about 22" would do the trick so the bulkheads clear the inside of the 2x4 in the back. Now that the back of the tank isn't actually resting on that rail, would it be wise to double up the back railing except the part where the bulkheads are so the back of the tank is resting on something very solid?

 My stand for the 210 is the same way, solid as a rock!

Sweet Jesus Xpistus! My 210 Stand (bought it this way) is 4x4 corners, 4x4 top rail, 2x4 bottom rail, and vertical 2x4's every 12" O.C.

I wish mine was better, but it's going 2" Sq. tube when I redo it for the Reef tank.

That stand is way overkill. It will hold up your 90 gallon and 2 more of them on top of it, as long is it is fastened together well.

Personally I would say dump the 4x4's you don't need them with the 2x4's legs under the frame. Just go with the 2x4's and if you are worried do an other pair on the ends just like the 2 on the sides.

You can see the pics of the stand being built here. Alot of people thought I was crazy with 3/4" oak, but it's all good.
