View Full Version : Fish that scoop up the substrate and slide it out the back of there throat?

What are these fish called. I saw them in a display a while back and didn't ask what they were call. They looked like a goby but the just scooped up the sand at the bottom of the tank and kept swimming while the sand slide out the back of their throat. I need a little help. What are they called. Thanks

sand sifting gobies.... there's a lot of them.

As boilermaker says, there are many. Two primary active genera (active=greater coverage of surface area) are Valenciennea and Amblygobius.

A yellow headed sleeper goby IMO is one the best sand sifters.

Diamond Goby is a good one. All white with some orange spots.
