Yes I know that is high but is it too high?

My original idea was to have an in wall tank which had to be high enough to show over the top of my sofa so I had to make it 48" high.

Will this be a problem besides my tank having a height of 72" now.

Id does create quite a new aspect though because the tank is now at eye level which is great

What about when you are sitting down?

I have never been a big fan of tall stands, but that is just personal preference. I wish I had a link to it, but someone had an in wall tank that was so high it was almost to the ceiling. I personally didn't like it, but it would at least give you a visual so you could decide for yourself. Afterall, its your house, your tank. Do what you will like.

well the tank will be between 48" and 72" so sitting eye level and standing level pretty much I think

what is the standard height for a stand

I think most factory stands are 28" - 30" (I think Oceanic ones are taller). Mine is 33" because I think the factory ones are a tad low. I am probably far outnumbered on my dislike for really tall stands though. From what I have seen, most people on RC like the tall ones.

I made my stand 36" tall. If I did 48" Id be worried about it tipping over if it is not tied down.

I put mine nearly that high, and regret it. I can't look down at the structure of the corals very easily, and the top of the corals are the nicest part! Also, my little one can't see it at all, which bothers me because kids love looking at the tank. Here's a photo shortly after it went up last year...

This is an excenllent question. I am in the early planning stages of my dream tank. I was planning on a 36" stand myself, I also find the prebuilt stands a little low for my tastes. I think a free standing tank 48" at the base would be too high.

mine is 44". And it is a real PITA to work on. In wall tanks are difficult (to say the least) to do any kind of aquascaping.

Well I will have two levels and on the bottom shelf will be my 55 gallon sump which should secure the whole stand from tipping over. However i will need a ladder to reach into the tank.

Mine is 47.2" high 72" wide

7 legs

my tank will therefore be 72" high

Mine is 40" high and I love it. No more bending over to look at the tank, and no more cramp sump area. As far as it being too high, how much room will be left to get into the tank from the top. That is the real question as to "if it's too high".

My stand for my 180 is ~42" tall and I love it!

Mine is 36tall with a aga75 and is the highest it can be without having to get out a stepladder every time I need to play in the sand. It seems to be a pretty good compromise between good viewing while standing or sitting. Depends on if you will be sitting in front for long periods of time or if your set-up will be at standing height.

well the top of the tank will be just below eye level for me

I have another 35" then for the canopy

Although it is high I believe when examining it closely I will either be doing some work on it in my fish room or standing in front of it. Sitting in my lounge on any of the other sofas other than the one directly in fron to of it ou can still have a nice view.

And for the little ones a closer look can be gained by jumpin gup on the couch.

Don't know if I am just trying to make myself feel better but I will see what it looks like very soon when the tank gets delivered.

Built mine 41" high and I love it. Looks great, and no more bending over to look at my tank. My only complaint is that it's difficult to work on without a stepstool.

This statement captures the experience I had with my last tank.

34 inch stand and I can look down perfect and take pics.
If your 6 feet and taller go ahead with the big 34+ stand but youll get lazy to pick things up from teh sand when the fall down.

40+ is a bit to high, wouldnt try it on a big set up though.

I don't see why you couldn't build any size stand you wish. People are building skyscrapers; it shouldn't be too much to ask for a tank to be at a desired height. With a decent welder and the appropriate steel tubing you could do just about anything. I’m sure it could be constructed out of wood too.

I'm sure most importantly people are concerned with the setup being too top-heavy. Ever considered a stand being wider at the base (like a pyramid) than at the top? This would solve the possibility of front to back rocking. You could also secure the stand to the wall or floor. You could incorporate sliding doors instead of swinging doors on the front so that the pyramid shape isn't so awkward.

Just got it finished and I LOVE IT! It is actually a 135gal. tank, besides the fact of getting a little step stool to do any serious work inside the tank, its the perfect height!

Yeah...I'm not quite 6'..just a hair under, but it is difficult for me to reach the sand without a stepstool.
