Opinions on using a QO 3000 for a CL on a 20 gallon. I was going to use as a return but have changed my mind. I am already drilled for (2) 3/4" Loc-lines at the top of the tank and can drill another hole closer to the bottom for the drain. I am thinking 1". I have absolutely no experience with closed loops so opinions are needed. Plumbing starts tomorrow. Oh, I bought a SCWD to use as well.

I have one and they are not very quiet after a few months. :)

Don't waste your money on the QO3000. I know from experience. They won't restart after you turn it off or worse...a power failure. When mine was brand new, it wouldn't restart without coaxing it. All I use it for now is transferring water from my mixing bucket to the tank.

That's odd, I have a QO4000 and it starts every time, no problem.

Do a search on RC and see all the negative posts about Quiet One. You're not the only one who has a good one, but there are lots just like me who have bad ones. I'll never buy another one.

I have had two 3000 pumps. The first burnt out after a year and a half. The new one does not restart well after you shut it off.

Not a good product.

There are many, many posts of QO pumps and restart problems.

That stinks. I just ordered a QO 2200 b/c my QO 4000 was too much for my sump.

OK. So I know some people have good luck and some people don't. I have mine and haven't even plugged it in. But back to the real question. Will this pump work well, all things considered, on a closed loop with a 1" drain and (2) 3/4" outputs through a SCWD?

ksp75, the answer is yes it will definitely work with your SCWD. I never tried mine outside the reservoir, so I don't know if it will leak. The one thing I can say about my QO3000 is when it starts it pumps like crazy. Actually at the same head space, it's much stronger than the Mag7 I use in the sump now.

Well its time to plumb the tank so I guess I will do it. Just need to decide if I want to drill a new hole for the sump return as well. That will put me at 4 holes and a 1" x 12" slot cut in the back wall of the tank all with a Dremel. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed on this one.

This is how the tank looks now http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/92436Tank_wo_cls.jpg

This is a top down view showing the overflow box w/ durso.

The current returns are 3/4" LocLine and I will add another 3/4" for the return and then a 1" drain about 5" off the bottom.

Thanks. Hope all goes well drilling more holes. Guess I will find out soon enough. Off to the LFS for Bulkheads and HomeDepot for the plumbing.
