Hey Guys,
I just got my aquapod in, and i ordered the MJ900 because i heard that was one of the things to do. Is this to replace the stock Pump, or in addition to the stock pump? If its supposed to replace the stock pump, do all i have to do is connect the tubing to the outlet on the MJ? what about where the water comes into the pump, any need to put the screens on? Also, i must have gotten the older version, where can i get that Y peice?
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff all I did when I replaced my original pump was to disconnect the old and connect the tubing to the outlet of the MJ 900. I also bought one of those hydor's. Currently I only have the one pump (900 MJ). Marine Depot has the hydor's on sale for I believe $8.99...I love those things...I'm going to order one for all of my power heads, in my other 3 tanks. Oh and as far as a screen, all I've got in the first chamber is a poly filter and a Marine land 12 gallon filter pad which contains carbon. I just cut the little tab thingy and set it right up against the poly filter. Tank is as clear as a bell. The other 2 charmbers are empty.

I did notice when I stuck my mj900 in I had to trim about 1/2 an inch off the tub to keep it from kinking
As for a hydor I was thinking of putting a MJ400 down in the lower return opening on my 12 gallon AP. that should give me more then enough flow.
But first comes a 32 Watt retrofit and swapping out the stock bulbs for some 28 watt units. That will give me 88 watts.
Not to mention some good old cooling mods...
Oh yea sorry also your MJ900 original mounting stand will need to have the outer ring cut in order to stick the unit to the bottom.
Just push the suction pad up in to the rear middle slot as best you can it will allow for the MJ900 to stick in place in the 4th chamber with out vibration..
here's something you may consider, perhaps going with a smaller pump [i have an aquapod 24g - not sure what size pump/output the 12g has]. i'm doing this to reduce heat and increase circulation.
currently i am running the stock aquapod pump [290gph - 32w] and a rio 600 [200gph - 9.5w]. that's a combined 490gph - 41.5w which exceeds the 10 - 20x circulation rate for a tank my size.
i'm going to purchase the wavemaker system from dr foster&smith which includes the wavemaker powerstrip and 3 maxijet 900 pumps [leaves me a spare]. the maxijets have the best reputation [from all my reading] on the boards for being quiet, powerful, and a good pump for wavemaker. this will give me a combined 460gph - 17w. that's a 69% reduction in watts which equals less heat.

both pumps will be installed in the second chamber [aquapod 24 only has 2] on the side wall using the magntic fastners one above the other [normal return bottom - wave maker pump top]. i'm then going to use asiankidds [member of nano-reef.com] great mod idea [which i've also seen here on larger tanks] and install tubing around the top of the tank [4th and 5th picture on attached thread] with directionals attached:

i've spent about 12 hrs reading up on this. and until i found asiankidds post i had planed on 2 rio 90's with a maxijet 1200 which would have been a combined 465gph - 25.6w. the downfall to this set up [even though i had lowered the watts] was; 1) 3 pumps [2 inside the tank], 2) rio's aren't as good as the maxijet's, 3) the 3 pumps combined with the wavemaker cost [which i would have to buy seperately] more than the wavemaker and 3 maxijet 900s from foster and smith as a package deal.
another benefit to this set-up; i will have 460gph being sucked through the filtration chamber instead of 290gph.
pretty excited about this. thanks for getting the wheels spinning so i could figure this all out. if you foresee any downfalls - please advise. won't be orderng until tonight.
question for those with maxijets: does the maxijet use 1/2" or 3/4" tubing?
does anyone know if the outlet on the maxijet pump uses 1/2" or 3/4" tubing? i haven't been able to find that info.
thanks.

Pretty sure it's not 3/4"--I wish I could give you more info.

thanks guys.
interesting, someone else told me it was 1/2" and dr foster and smith sells it with a kit that includes 1/2" tubing. based on that i guess i'll have to wait and see before ordering additional parts needed. hmmm...
