View Full Version : An end all salt thread

I see so many "which salt do you use" threads and polls, and i'm getting tired of responding to them. So heres an idea. State which salt you use, and a brief reason why. Nothing else! Each member can do this (1 post per member), then maybe the mods will make it a sticky. So, I will start...

I use Tropic Marin Pro because my coral polyps extend further with it as opposed to other salts. Also, I don't have to use as many additives.

Tropic Marin Pro. I like the way it mixes and tests.

Instant Ocean. I believe they are one of the oldest manufacturers of salt mix out there (which to me means experience and they're doing something right to stay in business) and I've used it for 4 years w/out problems.

Instant Ocean. It's always worked great for me and the calcium readings are always where I want them to be.

Instant Ocean, I like the way it mixes and it is found at the my lfs(oh and the cute fish on the package which is why i bought it in the first place, I just looked for whatever was the cutest(that was when i was starting out and knew nothing))

Instant ocean because I dont hear people complain much about its quality. Also because Randy uses it(the chemist), who I trust.

Instant Ocean here as well. IO has been around for a long time. Works great in all my tanks. Why fix whats not broken.

Instant Ocean. Public aquariums use it, it mixes quickly and completely, and the price is reasonable - good enough for me! :)

Whiteshark - No one said you has to respond to them, and if you're so tired of them then why did you start another one. I've never seen quatative data on salt popularity, so that's why I started a poll. I also thought it would be a simple poll that everyone here could participate in. Thanks.

OC I bought a pallet of it on special. have had no problems, but will switch one of my systems as a trial. A couple of lfs have been using Pacific Coast, but again, there close, wholesale, and no shipping. I will tell you that his display tank grow's like crazy, just got some frags from it

Instant Ocean is low in Ca and Mg but high in Alk
Oceanic is high in Ca and Mg but low in Alk
So, I use each in a 50/50 mix and it's worked better than using either one alone.

Sorry for snapping your head off whiteshark, I apologize. I use Tropic Marin by the way after switching from IO.

IO reef crystals

mixes fast, LFS has good deals on it, might start mixing with oceanis for higher CA and MG

so you use a 50/50]

i got 5 gallon changes with 3 cups of water, makes my tank about 1.026, i might do 1.5 cups of each now!

thansk for the idea!

IO - what I first started with, nicely priced, been around for years, and as stated before, its used by a LOT of public aquariums.

Oceanic, because it was the cheapest my lsf had. Also mixes well and my fish and coral seem to be happy. When i run out though i will most likely switch to IO

i started with coralife brand salt 3 years ago, had no complaints, but my LFS stopped selling it so i switched to INSTANT OCEAN 1.5 years ago.. i also have no complaints with the IO. i just got rid of my reef tank, and when i get to TX, i think i will try TROPIC MARIN PRO on my new setup, simply becase i was born in MARIN County CA. Instant Ocean, because my great grandfather brought me back a bag from Montana.

Here's that story (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=824093&highlight=I+just+got+IO+Salt+from+Montana)

Reef Crystals, because it's Instant Ocean with more calcium and other minerals. It's a proven salt and my LFS sells it at cost. Can't beat that.

I use tropic marin because it has a lot of trace elements and is cheaper than TM pro :-)

Reef Crystals! I've used Kent, then read about different salt's composition and decided to go with IO, because it has less of "undesirable" chemicals (copper, arsenium, aluminium, etc...). But I always ended up with low Calcium, so I switched to RC for higher Ca content.

I used IO for years, then switched to Oceanpure Pro, It mixes easy, and the Ca, Mag, and Alk levels are right were I want them, no need to add anything to it.

I remember someone posted a sweet link that contained stats on trace elements in all salt. I use IO but the Ca and Mg is too low. I think Reef Crystals or TM Pro came out on top but I can't remember. Whatever the case I'm lucky to get IO. Other than that it's all no brand Japanese stuff that is equally as expensive.

I use Proline SuperSalt. One 5 gallon bucket makes up 400 gallons of salt water. (You have to add pure salt to the mix--I uses Morton's canning and pickling salt for that.) I am very new to the hobby, so may find this doesn't work well for some reason, but so far I have been happy with the results and the price is great ($47 for the concentrate and $20 for the Morton's gets you 400 gallons). You have to have a good mixing tool (I use an electric drill with a paint mixing attachment) and measure everything very carefully, but otherwise it is less hassle than the bulkier total mixes. Curious if anyone used this long term and if so, what they think.

Reef Crystals here. My CA never drops below 425 with little additive.

Red Sea here. I started with it and I've had no problems. Not to mention when I started in the hobby and read about the various salts, it is supposed to be the closest to natural sea water when mixed.

Mortons... It's a little more than the store brand, but I'm not a big fan of goiters, so I spring for the iodine.

I was born in Marin County, CA (Terra Linda) - lol

Red Sea Pro - no real reason, needed something new after the Kent salt problems. I might switch to either Tropic or IO in the future (Red Sea Pro is expensive and I think has too much CAL.

I think a poll is a better way of finding out what people are using. I would rather see numbers rather than going through a 50 page thread to see what the general concensus is

Has anyone heard of Crystal sea Salt http://www.aqualifesupport.com/getDetail.php?ID=152400
I am just looking for people that are using it. I am hoping to test the levels on it tonight and see where they are coming out at after being mix.

If somone has already tested this please let me know.

NSW, because it's easy and I don't have the room to mix my own. Also good consistancy, no additives initially.

I am glad this thread is here after posting a question about my Ca++ levels being off the chart even though I don't add calcium supplements. I like Mike's idea of mixing --hadn't thought of that.

Me too, I'm not willing to pay an extra $15 a bucket for Ca and Alk when I'm dripping Kalk anyways.

That being said I'll probably switch to IO when I run out. I havent really noticed any difference.
