Im going to have a closed loop for flow. Which pump is affordable and effective.
Also what is a good sump return pump- external. ?

It is a 100 gallon wide tank with a oceanic model 2 sump.

For a closed loop, I would look into a ReefFlo Dart. It does 3600gph for only 140-160watts because it doesnt have alot of head pressure capability...perfect for a closed loop as long as you use large enough pipe. If you were to split up the output with an oceansmotions.com device, you would have an awesome loop for a 100g. I would do a 1.5" intake if not a 2", then a 1.5" outlet into the oceansmotions, where you can have 4x 1" outlets coming out of with a dual sequential drum in the OM.

For the dart... I would definately do either 2 x 1.5" inlets wyed into a single 2", or a single 2". No point is wasting all that flow using a 1.5" inlet. It will decrease the flow potential of the dart roughly 50%.

I agree... the dart is an excellent choice.

go with the dart!

3600gph!!! isn't that a little too much over kill on an 100g...?!
what about a QuietOne around 1000gph?

It all depends on what you plan to keep... I noticed most of the guys that are responding are SPS guys so no the dart is not necessarily overkill. If you want to run lower flow, a quite one like a 4000 or 5000 would be a good option. Having several of there pumps they are decent IMO but do not last that long (maybe 1-2 years). They do not add much heat if they are ran externally but do tend to add someheat if ran internally. If you can afford a sequence pump they do have other models that are lower flow applications that would be a much better option than the quiet one pumps due to the fact that they will last at a minimum of 5 + years (probally 10 or better) and put off little to zero heat and are quite as a mouse but you pay for it initially.

Thats an important question to answer. Most of the time, if you ask about flow, people will recommend the maximum flow witht he best pump for the job. But that may not fit your needs the best.

That being said, Sequence pumps are great. They just came out with a smaller model, the Snapper, 2400gph max and draws something like 98watts.

Nah.
You gonna do SPS?

for small pumps, the blueline NS800 is good to look at. 875gph at 0' head for 40 watts, adn $119 to boot.

Ill be keeping only monti. cap. for sps. rare softies. zoos, rics. Maybe Lps

Well with what you are keeping you do not need that much flow but all of the above IMO will like the extra current and of course your fish will love it ! I personally do not like the bluline / paworld (same pump different label) pumps... they add quite abit of heat in my experience. For low flow application I like the quiet one pumps like the 3000 or 4000. I have a 100 gallon that is a mixed reef that I run 3000 gallons per hour on and everything loves the flow !

so you think for my sump return maybe just a QuietOne would be good? A Oceanic Model 2 sump with an ASM G3 skimmer.

And how about a bigger QuietOne or a Little Giant???

oh yea what about a Ehiem 1250 or 1260 for sump return???

1250 is enough for a return pump.

As for the Dart vs. what you are going to keep. Softies like flow too...just spread out more and with less turbulence...thats all. The output of the dart can be manipulated to work with whatever you want to keep. The more you break up the outputs, the more you break up the turbulence. I have a friend with dual hammerheads on his 210g...but the outputs are broken up into something like 20 ports, many of which cancel each other out so the tank's overall flow is gentle. OTOH, if he had both of those pumps flow through nothing but two 1.5" nozzles for that 10,000gph of flow...the tank would be a mess.

For SPS, I would do the 4x 1" outlets, regulated with an Oceansmotions device. This would split the 3600gph (more like 3000gph in the end) among two outlets at a time...sequentially switching from nozzle to nozzle with about 1500-1800gph for each outlet.

For a softie tank, I would still use a dart...I would simply break up the outlets into 8x 3/4" ports. Less turbulence because the flow is broken across more ports...but keeping the ability to get flow to each corner of the tank if desired. The pump's output could be run with 1.5" pipe into an OM 4-way, same as with the SPS, but each 1" outlet could be split into two 3/4" outlets. That would mean only about 750-900gph at each outlet...not much. Or, the OM drum that only blocks one part at a time would leave 3 outlets active on a 4-way valve, so only about 500gph at each nozzle.

Either way, I would go with the dart. Its not the gph of the pump so much as how you use it.

marinedepot.com,
Oceansmotions.com for the wave-valve.

i just got off the phone with Paul from oceansmotions. He's a genius...seriously. were doing the Dart with a 4-way. Eheim 1260 for return. he told me how to do everything, i mean everything.

yeah, he sure is something else. he gives you that fuzzy 'just talked to someone with a british accent' feeling that makes you feel all safe and enlightened after you get off the phone. it just makes you confident in buying his stuff...lol.

But seriously...the OM device is perhaps the best wave device made...just short of having something with internal powerheads. I love my OM 4-way.
