I'm wondering if we might need a little clarification on this coral. These aren't my pic's but I recently picked up a frag of this one [the coral on the right] and it's a truly stunning piece :D

A couple of years ago I picked up a frag of this one locally which came from the coral pictured below [GARF] it's a beauty too! I lost my frag of it though :(

Are they the same coral? What do you think? Or which do you think is the Paletta Blue? Or are there two... blue? :)

I'm not sure what the second coral pictured is but I'd like to have a frag of it. The first picture, the coral to the right looks consistant with the Paletta blue that I got recently.

Chris

I'm not much into names or LE's etc... If I like a coral I like it :D You can call it Susan for all I care  I just thought it was a little... odd.

FWIW the MP blue frags I sent both of you came from a mother colony that grew from a frag I aquired directly from Norm at Garf about 4 years ago. The coral in my tank was mostly blue for a while. Here is a pic from a couple of years ago:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/fishdoc11/Dsc00854.jpg

The coral has changed color over time to look like this:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/fishdoc11/Dsc01400.jpg

So the MP blue's both of you aquired from me are direct from the source:) In fact Garf lost all of their colonies a couple of years ago and I sent them several to repopulate their stock. I am also assuming Stucky_t's MP blue also came from me in a trade we made last summer.

FWIW the second pic posted to start the thread is under NO flourescents.

Hope that clarifies things a bit:)

Hey cool! Even got some lineage info!! :)

For the record I don't really care about LE's either. I just thought that "Jimbob Blue" was a good looking coral so I got it.
And I might add I got it at a very nice price for a generous sized frag from Chris aka fishdoc!! ;)

The first picture is from my tank :) And the colony in the pics I have been growing since getting a frag from Chris (Thanks again fishdoc!!) I have maybe cut a frag once for someone but otherwise I haven't touched it so I doubt any frags have come from me???

Anyways this coral was one that I always wanted and could never get from GARF, later to find out theirs had croaked....

Here are some other pics to drool over:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/stuckey_t/mikepalettablue1.jpg

Both of these pics were from the coral in GARFS tank I believe....

I'm sure depending on the flow in the tank it can take some pretty wild shapes and forms! Mine continues to pick up more of the intense blue color as it gets bigger. Truly an awesome coral.

normally i'd say there's no way the first and second pic are the same coral, but i think i have a similar coral (not trying to imply it's the same or as nice or anything) that came in as wild recently that a few of us split up.

here's how it looked when it came in (in a friend's tank):

and here's how it looks in my tank:

Manderx, do you by chance run T5s?

manderx

right now it's 2x175w iwasaki14 with 2xT5s (was blue+ at the time of the pic, now UVL-SA). one of the other guys who got a piece runs a single 250w hamilton14 and nothing else, and his looks just like mine, except that he has fewer but faster growing branches so it's much more staglike.

the first pic is under 2x250w XM10K with 2xVHO URI-SA and 2xT5 blue+.

The image above is from my tank in 2002. I fragged that coral a lot over the years and gave the frags away all over the Boise area. It seldom looks the same from tank to tank. The coral's color is really dependent on the water parameters, current and lighting. It ranges from a reddish brown with purple tips to a teal with blue tips to a deep blue with purple tips.

I took down the 120 gallon tank a couple of months ago and set up a 150. The coral was a teal color with blue tips at the time I took the tank down and now it is deep blue with purple tips like it was in 2002.

FWIW, The image was taken one month after changing half my bulbs from NO to VHO and after rebuilding the aquascaping due to a rock slide...

Here are frags from my tank that went to some of the locals.

garfvolunteer, maybe you can share what requirements it takes to get the MP blue to a deep blue with purple tips. i know that'll help me. thanks

Here's the Paletta's Baby Blue I got from tfp a while back (I'll let you figure out which one it is...;) ). Looks nothing like any that I've seen posted up above.

Here's Tims mother colony from his gallery:

Hey Scott, I wonder if the difference in growth shape and color is on account of the lighting? You grew that out under VHO didn't you? [as did GARF] Maybe it develops differently under MH's? dunno...

Here's the beauty I got from Chris... as well as another [ORA blue mille] Thanks again!

FYI: I PM'd Chris about this thread prior to posting and in no way meant to imply I didn't receive what was promised. I've never had a better experience dealing with a fellow hobbiest

The coral from my tank grew in that droopy shape but many of the frags from it grew more verticle. When I first mounted the frag, it was under NO lighting with moderate current. The second image was under half VHO and half NO with high current. The third image was under 100% VHO and high current...

Thanks,

Scott

Thanks for chiming in Scott:) I drooled over that tank many times looking through Garfs site years ago.

From what I have been able to figure the coral will develop a more solid blue color in slightly higher nutients and lower light but that's just what I am guessing based on my results.

thanks, Chris

I've seen it in at least 10 different tanks in the area and it has never looked the same in any of them. We have all raided Chris' tanks over the last few years;).

I've perfected the art with rubber lined pockets. Amazing what just a 2 mil will do;).

The new address will remain a secret and the names will be changed to protect the innocent........the innocent corals that is. They have seen the dreaded side cutters one too many times lately............

still keeping my fingers crossed that mine will become more blue :(
looks like it could be the real deal, but it won't turn completely blue in my tank. always been more of a tannish body with deep blue tips. i've tried mounting various frags in high/low light and high/low flow but the only thing that changed was the growth formation.

11-2005: in medium flow, 15" directly below 250w 20k's and 80w T5 blue plus
