View Full Version : my visit to the mad reefer

The family and I visited the Mad Reefer today to let my son pick out a coral or fish for me for fathers' day. We were greeted and left on our own until I flagged the clerk to come and bag the coral my son picked out for me. The freedom to shop without interruption bordered on us being ignored for the entire visit. When I did get help there was no discussion of tank size, age, contents, or anything reefing or even if I wanted extra water in the bag because it was 90+ degrees out and I came from Champaign (I had a styro and ice packs in the car). The torch coral was well packed - it was attached to a styrofoam block and floated upside down in the bag to protect it on the trip home.

Everything had a lable and a price. The fish and corals that they did have appeared to be healthy though nothing unusual jumped out at me or was even all that colorful. I must have visited between shipments. I guess not everyone gets a coral or a fish for fathers' day.

I liked the layout and space between the aisles of tanks (not that it really mattered as we were the only customers there.) There seems to be plenty of room for expansion, maybe into drygoods? The wholesale club concept is interesting though no one took the time to explain it to me.

I do see myself visiting the store if I am in the area but not if it requires a special trip from Champaign.

They haven't had anything in close to two weeks.

They are quite laid back, if you have something on your mind you need to ask.

Laid back doesn't get any more of my money.

Honestly I'd rather be laid back than bugged constantly. It's not like Walmart where not only do they not ask you if you need help, but you can't find anyone either, there is almost always someone withing 30ft of you that you can ask for help.

ah...didn't know if you had someone for that already or not.

i think a wysiwyg page for your current stock of corals and rarer fish would be killer.

are we allowed to talk about this here? i don't want to cross the line.

What does this mean ?

The wholesale club concept is interesting though no one took the time to explain it to me.

andycook

Every item had two prices listed, the lower price of the two had wholesale club. Beyond that I have no clue.

In a nutshell, you pay a fee to join the club and enjoy discounted prices. You'll easily make up the cost of the fee in short order through the discount.

That would have been cool to hear about when I visited the shop.

How did you hear about it if no one mentioned it to you?

andycook

I read the price tags :)

Oh yeah, duh, sorry.

I guess that shows how long it's been since I've bought livestock. I've been buying out of catalogs for so long now that I forgot about the tags on the tanks.
