carbon is mainly used for reduction/elimination of ammonia. it also helps some in clarity. i dont use carbon filtration in any of my tanks. i have DSB's and LR to do that. i do water changes of 25% every 3-4 weeks. i have small bio-load and only feed once a day. my clean-up crew does what little food is not consumed in 6-10 minutes. if you have substantial bio-load you will want to keep carbon filtration on 24-7. skimmer is not carbon related. it pulls out organic waste such as bacteria or food that cant be broken down via the nitrogen cycle. Activated carbon takes out things that tend to yellow the water, so it is useful. I tend to run small amounts 24/7 and change them out regularly, about once per week.

well somewhat yes, but when you do water changes it will replenish what was lost and you can always dose more calcium depending on what method you use.

i have also been advised to run carbon with certain softies to deal with their chemical warfare. in my situation, numerous people advised me to run carbon to pull out the toxins from my finger leather.

FROM A LOT OF RESEARCH I HAVE DONE FOR THIS MATTER YOU CAN USE 24/7 CARBON (AS LONG ITS A GOOD QUALITY FREE PHOSPHATE ETC. LIKE SHECHEM'S) BUT IN LOWER QUANTITIES OR FULL SUGGESTED QUANTITY PERIODICALLY(15 DAYS ON -15 DAYS OFF)
