I bought a combination floating thermometer/hydrometer. The bottom part is the theremometer and there is glass stem running up the top that is for the SG. I'm not sure how to read the SG on the hydrometer part...does anyone have experience with these? They didn't come with any instructions :(
On the stem there usually is a part that has a green or a different colored area, 1.022-1.026, and the lines or dashed are read like the thermometer. I use one and just make sure it floats in the green part and call it good enough

Believe me, save yourself troubles and get the refractometer.
I think the cheapest one is around $50, and works great.
