just in the process of setting up 2 new tanks and thought that now my nano has cycled and is going to run with a cannister filter system. can i connect up a sump into the system also run it for 3 months or so and consider that this sump will have sufficient bacteria growth to allow me to then attach my 100g (FOWLR) and away we go? slowly however....

will there be any side effects to removing it from the smaller setup, except for the fact there will be less filtration... the cannister is enormous anyway so im not worried about it not being adequate.

i thought it would be better to do the cycleing of the sump this way as so much life dies off on live rock when it goes thorough those spikes...

thanks

Does the sump have liverock in it? You only really need to worry about cycling when you've got "new" liverock.

If your sump is like mine (nothing in it besides baffles, a skimmer and a return pump) you don't really need to worry about cycling. You will be concerned about adding a lot of new salt water to an existing system though....it could shock current tank inhabitants.

IMO.

thanks... there is currently no inhabitants in the tank so no one to bother... however there will be a fuge and some very small pieces of live rock in the sump, but im sure if i put in only a small piece at a time i will not make anything spike...
