Lovely Mandarin, the colors are different from the rest, I hope you got a lot of Pods in your tank? it won't live more than 2 - 8 months without a good food supply.

Nice one. I tried over 6 of them, and all past away. But the one spotted one is still surviving for years. JD

Well they'll wipe out your pod pop. very quickly, so have a backup plan.
jimbo- I really hope you dont try 6 of everything.

do you have a refugium? how much rock? any competition? like a six-line Wrasse? other than that, it's very beautiful.

pnsnowboard
06/21/2006, 07:49 PM
there is no competition there is only 2 other fish (both blue green chromis) in the tank it has been set up a year that whole year i dosed DT's everyday and i have a 10 gallon fuge every night you can see the pods out swimming like crazy there must be millions in there oh yea there is about 125 pounds of live rock

with your plan i have high hopes. sounds like you've done your research. it's just every time i hear someone got a mandarin, i ask the basic questions, just to be sure. but i think you'll have success. just stay one step ahead of that little beauty :)

I'm not beating you up at all, and I doubt anyone else here is. I'm really excited for you, mandarins are beautiful fish. I was just making sure you were aware of this, which it seems you are, so congratulations for doing your research. I just can't tell you how many people get these without knowing and wind up starving them. Best of luck!

yea when i read that jimbo has gone through 6 it really made me mad because thoes are the people that make fish like these go endangered

So where are the other "pics"?

I only see one. Keep us updated on how the fish does. I have heard so many failure stories that I would like to hear some nice success stories.

My LFS told me the only way to keep a mandarin is to train it to eat frozen food.

yes she is very small probobly the smallest mandrin i have ever seen but her coloring is amazing this is why i waited 6 months after my tank was ready for a mandrin because i wanted to find one with perfect coloring

She is very virbrant. Lucky you! Anyway, I have one but mine eats roe as well as pods that I breed in a different tank. Roe is those fish eggs that you find ontop of susi. So if you do have any problems (which I don't don't think you will) with her not getting enough to eat, there's you're solution. I've never come across a manarin that doesn't eat it like popcorn!

yes she is very small probobly the smallest mandrin i have ever seen

that seems to be a key factor in mandarine survival. alot of people cant get past their biggest fish for the price hangups. the small ones seem to adjust to captivity better and are willing to take a wider variety of foods (and they need less of it as well) the larges and especialy jumbos seem to be very picky, poorly adjustable, and need lots more food.

it seems that with mandarines (and alot of other things) there is alot of "expert advice" that gets repeated based on assumptions after failures (ex. my fish died, so the fish must be impossible to keep because im an expert with 6 months experiance and couldnt possible be at fault) or flamer responses.

the best advice comes from success. those who have had success with mandarines dont share the impossible to keep mentality that elicits 6 - 10 "concerned responses" as soon as the word mandarine is mentioned. those with success know that a mature tank with liverock (a fuge helps too) and no fast or aggressive fish competing with the mandarine will support a mandarine just fine. if kept properly, mandarines can be one of the simplest and most rewarding reef fish to keep. they are active, colorful, have great personality, and when you go away for a week (i just got back tuesday) you dont loose any sleep worrying if anyone fed the fish, because they find thier own food in the well established tank.

ofcourse the original poster seems to know this anyway, so sorry for the rant.... just my .02

Sorry if you felt I was beating up on you, that was not the intent, it's just that Mandarins tend to be the number one "Impulse Buy" fish, but looking at your specs I see that you had this well thought out, I am very sure you will have no problems with a setup like yours.

Holygrail45
06/23/2006, 01:04 AM
Okay, well...I love mandrins but have held off moving forward because:
A) My tank is only 3 months old
B) I dont know what a pod is, let alone if I have enough
C) Please refer to A and B.

I'll do the reaseach when Im ready to buy, now its just green chromies, some clowns and my coral...but I will want to move in this direction and googling "pods" is a far shot from where I'll end up needing to research...any simple breakdowns? Links or suggestions?

Greatly appreicated....

PS: PN...great looking fish, congrats.

My tank is 2.5 months old with a mandarin.

Buy harvested live pods and throw them in the main display/fuge at night. Its easy;)

wouldnt pods die after being kept in a bottle?

I have had my mandarin for well over a year and I have done nothing special except have an established tank to put it in.

The Reefer91
06/24/2006, 06:51 PM
roons, the reason might also be cyanide poisoning. some of them are caught that way.

roons
06/24/2006, 07:29 PM
really..............well one i got local and one i got from la.....................they both just stop being lively and keeled over, i assumed it was lack of food, would a flame angel and six line wrasse eat all the copepods b4 he would have a chance to get them? all i can figure, cause my tank was a year old in the least, now its 26 months and i see tons of mysis and amphi swimming in fuge but not many copepods now, do they eat these as well?

The Reefer91
06/24/2006, 07:33 PM
both six line warsse and flame angels will eat pods. the wrasse more than the angel though.

AquaReeferMan

I have ordered pods online that come in bottles many times. There is never any die-off for me. They usually ship it cold. I dont know but they dont die. I got 2 or 3 bottles of atround 500. They come with a little macro algae. They swim around in the bottle. I just put it in the tank and opened it. They will venture out. The 6 Line will eat the pods.
