I have set up a new 50 gallon tank
The alk has risen to 6 meq/l because af a bicarb spillage
I only have some lr and snails and macroalgae in the tank.
calc is at 400.
how do I safely lower the alk.
would the addition of vinegar have an effect on anything other than pH?

No, vinegar will not lower the Alk but the pH. You are better off just leaving it alone, as it will come down on its own. Not only that but higher Alk falls faster than a lower Alk in general.
