OK i have an octopus can i free mine in my reef tank!!!!! ID KILL to let him swim around like that.
Man, sorry to hear about the crashed tank. Makes me wonder why I even bothered setting up a 180. A load of cash, time and effort, all for the inevitable... one day, it will die. From a tank crash or other means but for sure, it will come to an end. Maybe I should have saved the spent money for a yearly trip to the tropics. Hey, there's an idea, I hear the coral reefs can even successfully keep a Moorish Idol!!!!!

OMG i only have a 46 but that is ...
i fell so bad but the worst part is im 12 and all my savings is in my tank so if it crashed id cry like a baby.
i hope you get back into it and all those people saying i knew it was going to happen they are the ones whos tanks should crash.

can i keep an octo in my reef tank?
Animal Mother
04/16/2008, 11:00 PM
You can. Whether or not you should may be a different story. Depends on the corals kept. Many of them are very stingy. Imagine living surrounded by rose bushes and sticker patches everywhere you go.

Hey can anyone tell me if that octopus was IDed???
He's such a cool specimen and from the posts I read, someone had suggested an ID and it wasn't true so I'm wondering if anyone figured out what it is? I'd love to know!
Animal Mother

It was an Octopus briareus, Carribean Reef Octopus.

I don't think so. I know for sure the reef stores I go to received an Indo and Bali shipment when I bought the corals and that's where that Octopus came from, never had/bought any shipment from the Carribean.

The blue glow and the webbing is a dead giveaway.
Most likely they got a shipment of live rock from Florida and it worked its way through their system and ended up hitching a ride home with you in a coral from the other side of the world.

I guest your right Animal Mother, the blue glow and the webbing it is. Thanks, I admit i'm no Octo expert, I apologize for that.

No need to apologize at all. I'm obsessed with them so I pick up a lot of info. It's nice to be able to pass it on.

Sadly to say, this past Sunday coming home from a 10 day family vacation to discover that my Reef Tank was out of power maybe for a week long. Everything was devastated (I don't know what worst I can say), everything was black and an unbearable strong gross smell. I went to the back room cautiously and one of the plastic tubing from my RO unit burst, spraying water all over until it short circuited some of the electricals and tripped two of the aquarium main breakers. Luckily nothing caught on fire, it just completely shut down the tank. All of my Fish, Clams and Octopus were completely decomposed and the Corals are wiped out. My 7 years of hard work with this 180 gallon Reef Tank just went down the drain in a matter of days. I did not have a tank sitter so I set up an Auto-Top-Off, the additonal plastic tubing that connected to the RO's main membrane had some weak spots on it and was the main cause. I was confident and so proud of myself with the set-up everything was running nicely, the auto-feeder and the the food for the Octo was all ready.
What a way to come home from a vacation, I would not wish this happen to anyone. What a bad feeling! I'm just a little messed up right now. Good bye everyone and good luck to all, thank you so much for all your compliments.
Manny.

Wow!!! What a rollercoaster!! My biggest fear is my tank crashing.. Cool Octopi, I am obsessed with them :) 2 3/4 sleeve tattoos with Octopi and squid. Anywhoo I am really impressed that you jumped back in with both feet! I would probably break down and cry and then take a break for several years. New tank looks awesome!!

Sorry about the crash. I am new to reefkeeping and found your post while looking to see what all people got as hitchhikers, I got two coral banded shrimp, four crabs and some snails and was kinda feeling guilty. Now I have decided to just be happy with my hitchhikers and make sure that my tank is setup so that no one thing can wipe out the power to my tank. You are an inspiration and when this computer decides to agree with me or more like when the fourteeen year old wakes up, I will look at all the picks, PLEASE keep the post going, thank you, Reddog

Man! I just saw this thread, sorry about the crash, I think most have us have been there or will go there:eek2: . I wish I had all my fish, inverts, and corals back from the crash I had about 7 months ago. Just somthing as simple as a stuck heater can kill 2+ years of hard work.

When I read the first page of a long thread, I always skip to the last page and read it before I post. This time, I had to go back and read all the pages in between. Definitely not what I was expecting! Nice job with the new tank!
I almost got a "catfish" the other night while I was doing a water change. :)

Ok I have now read all 13 pages of this awesome/sad thread. First of all that is an awesome hitchhiker. Second of all my wife would now like to kill you because I am planning another tank for an octo now. I am very glad that you have restarted and it looks great by the way. Lastly after reading all the pages I am amazed at how many people read the first page and then go to the end and post about how beautiful the octo is and how they want you to send it to them. I wish everyone would take the time to read all 13 pages. Mods should add a line to the title that tells posters to read the entire thread before posting about the octo. Thanks again for all the great reading it kept my days at work entertaining.

Thank you everyone and I apologize for the lack of respond. I've been busy for a while on a new install of an inground fiberglass saltwater swimming pool and spa.
Just to update everyone on my 270g SPS dominant upgrade. It now surpassed the second year, last winter I discovered an infestation of AEFW. My tank was full of SPS and have growned over the liverocks and some to each other that it was way to much work for me to take them all out for medication. I had over 50 different species and lost about 80%. The route I took was to add Wrasses that will hopefully take care of the pest. It was pretty painfull to see all the skeletals I was pulling out, and with all the disturbance it went through a new cycle again. Currently the tank is stabilized, i don't plan to add any SPS anytime soon, I felt like i've been cursed. I'm glad everyone liked the Octopus, they are definitely a fun pet to have and if you plan to have one be sure to do your research first before you purchase. They're for an experienced reefer.
Happy Reefing!

My blue ring was very peacefull , I got mine unexpectedly in a shipment. . anyway nice octo you are the man.

Crabbypatty, you probably missed the part when my old 180g tank crashed accidentally. I don't have that Octo anymore, unfortunately. I don't think mine was poisonous and thank you for your kind words.
