They tend to trap nitrates. I have used them in the past, and have always switched to a refugium. I even had a hang on fuge for my 45 gal. The macro and lr work great for nitrate export.

I run a 1200 gph canister to filter out detritus and particulates. If you keep it clean, your nitrates will be ok.

I think that for carbon only it would be good as long as you clean it out every week or so, otherwise I think it will generate too many trates. I would go with a fuge like Todd mentioned for the main filtration.

Fuge with chaeto and a deep sand bed. Nitrates = 0

A good healthy sandbed will take care of the detritus, but a canister for carbon is not a bad idea. Although I run my carbon in my sump near my fuge. There are many ways of doing this, and none of them are wrong. We just throw out ideas that seem to work for us.

Check out www.nano-reef.com there are lots of mods people are using to increase the filtration for there all in one setups... Best of all they have a search tool that actually works. :)
