I've attached 2 pics of my overflow. The return has a hole drilled on the inside of the 90 angle as a siphon break. But the pipe seems really high. I settled it in as deep as I could but as you can see from the pic the return is above the ledge on the tank edge. I've had to raise my inflow pipe as high to keep that siphon break underwater so that it doesn't sound like rushing water. The pipe doesn't seem like it could go much lower as I only have a 1/8-1/4 inch clearance between the return pipe and the cutout on the overflow on the right side.

For anyone who has this...did I do something wrong? It seems like with the pipes this high I can't put a cover on my tank (not that I'm going to) and the water level in the overflow is level with the tank.

Thanks in advance. Sorry if the pics aren't great. Getting tired of taking my lights off all the time... =)

I drilled my siphon breaks in my loc line in the tank, not in the elbow. I drilled 2 on each side for extra protection. My water falls about an inch and a half into my overflows, not level with the overflow openings.

Not real sure about your particular case but did you read the directions with the megaflow kit? The kits are made to fit any megaflow overflow and need to be cut to the right length, in the directions it tells you how much to cut for certain tanks...

the return pipe is supposed to be cut to size...there are two pieces of paper that came with the accessory kit

if its on the 72g bowfront, it says its supposed to be cut to 20-3/4 inches long

the part that moves the water to your sump has a pipe within a pipe and its heighth is adjustable by pushing or pulling

I have the same problem.. gurgle gurgle gurgle.. Mine isnt set as high as ur drain pipe as i followed the instructions so that there is some water fall effect fromt he overflow.. I believe thwater fall helps pull water up fromt he lower openings in the overfolw into the drain/return section. If it doesnt fall there is no suction/syphon working...

I havent yet figured how to stop the gurgling either. I pulled the drain tube and the overflow instantly emptied and the falling water made more noise than the gurgle from the syphone break.. I thought about covering the syphone break hole as my sump has room enough for the water to fall past the 90 that dips down into the water, which would stop flow to the sump as well..

If I try it I'll let u know the results.

I plugged all the holes on the sides of the durso stand pipe, I super glued suction cups over all the holes and the gurgling stopped, the gurgle in my case was coming from those side holes (not sure why aga put those in there to begin with) so my stand pipe is more of an actual diy durso one.

I bought the tank used, so I didn't get instructions. I didn't drill the hole but I thought they all had them there. I can take it off and measure as it does seem about 1/2 inch too tall.

So there is no problem with plugging the hole and drilling a new one lower? I don't really get much noice from my drain pipe...the pumps are louder.

Doox, what happens if you have a power outage? Don't you have a siphon issue until the water level hits the bottom of the U-shaped piece on the drain pipe? Seems like it would be a lot of water.

Thanks for all the responses. Everyone is great on here as usual.

it just drains out until the water level is below the overflow lip, I also have a hole drilled in on the return pipes about an inch below the surface. I have a 30g as a sump and have no problem when I unplug the return pump.

The key is the hose connected to the outflow. I am using the 1.5" "vacum cleaner" type hose. Your outflow plumbing needs to be larger than the diameter of the bulkhead. Make sure there are no low spots in the plumbing. Most of these gurgling/toilet noises are due to not having a straight flow to the sump. If the plumbing is not big enough, you get a buildup of back pressure. To overcome this, water has to build up enough pressure to overcome this. So water collects, overcomes the pressure and flushes to the sump. Back pressure again builds up and the cycle repeats. All I hear from mine is a bit of waterfall noise. If you plugged any of the side holes, unplug them.

after plugging the side holes all the noise mine made was a slight trickle, my drain line is about 8" long and goes straight down into the intake of my sump.

Never had a problem with the Megaflow. Re-read your instructions and make sure you didn't miss something.

lol...one person says unplug the holes for best results, the next says to plug them. Gotta love this hobby!

True, there are a lot of opinions. Fact is that the directions work unless you have an odd size tank.

it worked for me with the holes too, just gurgled alot, I just modified it to be a true durso standpipe and not aga's version.

Pete,

I didn't get the directions. I bought the tank and the pipes from someone else. I think they installed the pipe incorrectly.

Thanks all. Will fiddle with it this weekend.

I've got an AGA and I just simply put homemade dursos in it. Quiet as can be and cost next to nothing to construct.

Thanks all. Next possibly dumb question...does anyone use their overflow box to grow cheato or as a mini-fuge?

Shooter, the new AGA megaflows come with a durso. =)

Actually, my understanding is that there is a difference between the AGA version and the actual durso version of these drain pipes, per discussions like this one:

I have an AGA 120 with the megaflow type of overflows, but I use homemade dursos in them.

Thanks Shooter. I didn't realize. Seems the AGA has some extra holes in it? I'll yank it out and check.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a durso?

Thanks.
