View Full Version : choice of tanks? rectangular or hexagon

The reasoning for my question I guess is to just get some opinions on what I've been thinking.

I have a 60G hexagon which is empty at the moment and a 55G we have filled with FW.

I thought the Hex would be a more unique display for a reef tank but is much deeper and a little more limited to sizing for MH lighting than a 55G. If I went this route I was looking at The Outer Orbit by Current which has 150w MH,2 65w compacts.

Placement of LR also has me slightly puzzled, how hard will it be to stack 60 - 90 lbs of LR in a 24" Hexagon shape.

Also, and I hate to ask a bunch of questions on 1 post but I just want to get this right the first time, are HOB skimmers even worth the lesser cost or should I just plan on running a sump under my stand?

Hi Full
[welcome]

In reef tanks deeper is usually not better. A deep tank becomes a challenge to light as getting good light penetration is a function of depth. Now, if it is to be a fish only, it doesn't make much difference but for a true reef expect to expend some big $$$ to light the hex.

Yeah, that's what I'm looking at now.....much easier to light the 55 as it's 8" shallower and alot easier to arrange rock I would think

And that extra 8" takes more watts and $ to illuminate. You might find this useful The Ligting Thread (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=550860)

I just ditched my 92g corner unit because its irregular shape was a pain in the neck to properly light.

Yeah, I'm gonna ditch the hex idea I think. Just so much easier dealing with 48" lighting, besides the simplicity of building a custom stand and canopy. Thanks for your input fellas:)

I would turn the 55 into a reef and if you still want a freshwater tank use the hex for that. The hex would be beautiful as a freshwater planted aquarium. I have a 60 gallon reef that I set up just over 6 months ago and it is really beginning to take shape and I sometimes can't stop looking at it.

I would go with the 55 too
