Urgent! Purple and Yello Tang fighting

I have just added a large Purple Tang and a smaller Yellow Tang to my 550l aquarium. They are nibbling at each other's fins. I called the LFS and they said it is normal for the first couple of hours then they'll leave each other alone.

Is this true? I do not want my fish to hurt each other!

I thought you didn't want to put two tangs with the same body shape in the same tank?? I know I have seen that somewhere even though I have seen tanks with entire schools of the same tang

i have a yellow and purple in my 220 that have been together over 2 yrs, what size is the tank? yes with tangs when others are introduced they will rough up each other in some form. this is their way of showing whos boss. let us know

you will just have to let them go at it and hope they chill out after they see that there both going to have to live together.

i had a purple, yellow, BLACK tang in a 125, with a naso and a blonde naso, and 1 chevron tang, they all got along, and i bought them all seperately, just make sure you have alot of space for them to chill out, when the going gets tough.

what size tank are they in

with a 150 gallon you should be fine, let everyone said it is a gurantee that these two fish have conflict for a little while.

Well it is now about 3-4 hours and they seem to be more tolerant of each other. I was so stressed when I saw the Purple Tang nip the Yellow Tang's fin... But it seems as if they are behaving. They have been feeding next to each other without too much aggression - except the odd chase. Now they are asleep - one this side of a live rock and the other on the opposite side in a small cave I built. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer???? :)

I'll just make sure they have adequate food so they don't feel threatend. Thanks for the comments!
