I have a clam in my 90g tank. I was cleaning the tank and trying to remove some particularly stubborn algae. In the process I accidentally floated some sand that ended up going into the opening of the clam. What harm will that bring to the clam? I do not believe it was much, but who knows.

A picture of my tank can be found toward the end of the following thread. I am not sure what type of clam it is, but here you will see the picture. Actually, there is a close up of the clam if that helps.

Thanks in advance for your help.

your clam is a Maxima.

the sand shouldn't bother the clam. they can open there byssal opening and let it fall out

mbbuna, thanks for the info.

Anyone,

I have only had the clam in the tank for a couple of weeks. The skimmer is pulling much less "gunk" out. I have heard the clam will help filter the tank. Is this true? Does it seem logical that the skimmer is pulling less out or do I have another problem I need to research. Is there anything in particular I need to target feed the clam or will it survive okay as is?

man your tankis clean... lol dont worry about the sand and it looks like you havea very small bioload so it is expected for the skimmer to slow down.. i dont target feed my clams they are photosynthetic...

if you want to add food for the clam just add a small amount of phyto to the whole tank. clams do "filter" the water but there not going to replace your skimmer
