I saw some hammers at a LFS and the guy running the show claimed they were deep water. They were very light color and translucent. They looked like bleached out coral. Is this a healthy color for a deepwater, or what the guy just messing w/me?

Never heard of anything like it (at least not the 'deepwater' part, since many are found pretty deep to begin with--predominately shallow water, though). There are some naturally translucent (as in clear) ones, though. Most have a translucent nature to them, anyway. These corals are actually extremely variable, so it is hard to tell anything for sure. Chances are, though, they were just lighter colored (or possibly bleached) and are being sold that way. Heck, the distributor may have even sold them as 'deep water.' Who knows
