I recently purchased a 24Dx Nano Cube and purchased some sand for the bottom. The filer flow seems to be creating a current though that is "blowing" sand all over my tank. Would oit be OK to buy some heavier stuff to place on top of the white sand to keep it down in the system? Or should I replace everything?

Is this a brand new tank? If so your sand will blow for a while!
In my 12 my return pump has blown my sand into little mounds here and there and I think it look's pretty cool actually.

It is a brand new tank, 2 days old. So is using white sand bad? Should I mix a little heavier stuff w/ it? The guy at the store just told me many fish/sea creatures prefer the softer bottoms. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem when i set mine up.
You have to play with your returns direction to equalize it out.
Took some time to get it where i wanted it without blowing up the sand bed
