When I purchase R/O water, should I add some kind of reef buffer to raise the PH or should I just use the R/O water as is?

Just use it as it is.

Sure, if you use it to mix the salt in it and the values deviate strongly you can adjust it.

Is it to replace evaporated water then there is no need to add anything in it unless you would use it as a solvent for some of the supplements you would use such as kalkwasser powder.

My advice is to ignore some bad advice in that linked thread. :lol:

First, I agree to get a test kit for alkalinity that uses a titration, like Salifert, LaMotte, Hach,or Seachem.

Then, once you get a number for alkalinity, decide what you want to add, which may very well optimally include baking soda if the alkalinity is too low. Long term, look for a balanced calcium and alkalinity additive system, such as limewater, a CaCO3/CO2 reactor, a two part, a DIY two part, etc.

There no need or desirability of adding anything to the RO water unless it is being used to supplement alkalinity.
