one of the newbie guides i read mentioned that the live rock should be fairly close to the top of the water since reefs usually are closer to the surface for sunlight. the tank i wish to use (already own) for my FOWLR setup is a 40 gallon show tank. this tank is more vertical than horizontal. am i'm going to run into problems with getting the rock to be close to the top (or any other problems?). i'd like to hear some feedback.

thanks,
ryan

i like to have the vertical rather than horizontal tanks...i believe we are in the same boat, as in i also have a 40 gal taller than longer, and i have about a pound per gallon (less maybe) and i have no problem...it doesnt really matter because the rock is getting more direct light than it would in the ocean...general rule of thumb is a pound of LR per gallon tho...i like more to have the rocky look and it builds up easy and more little critters to watch at night:)

nice tank.

don't you you think you might more vibrant colors if you paint the back of the tank black (or maybe even blue) instead of clear?

just wait for things to settle down...i added fish to mine 2 weeks after i had set it up and they're fine...big and fat and at the LFS in the main tank:)...add fish in 1 or 2 at a time and wait about 2 weeks to add others for the bioload to catch up
