This is my 55 gallon (standard) reef. I had wanted a 75 gallon, but with this being on the 2nd floor, i thought i'd go with 55.
Right off, we had all the equipment from previous tanks and the fact we've been preparing for a bigger tank for oh, 6 months. With that said, we went to the lfs in durham to get live rock. We returned with 8.99 a lb premium fiji (covered mostly in coralline) with a 4.00 discount per pound because we bought 50 lbs. So for 4.99 we got some pretty good fiji all things considered. Another 40 lbs was added from another tank, mostly covered in coralline. to aid in cycling, bio-chem filter media and 20 lbs of sand from year old tanks was added to the 40 lbs of florida crushed substrate.
As you can notice, the tank has 2 different color bulbs.
On the left is the 175 watt, 14k standard (single ended) Metal halide.
On the right is the 150 watt HQI 20k (double ended) Metal halide.
Along with one 48 inch VHO for actinic supplement and the planned purchase of a 20+LED hood that measures 10in x 10in the lighting is very good. The LED hood is fully programmable and will allow me to reproduce the reds and oranges that these blue bulbs don't show enough. Especially for sunrise and sunset.
A 1/4 hp chiller was added for good measure, to the effect of 78.5 degree's.
