have they changed through the years significantly that purchasing an older one would be detrimental.

I only ask because I found one for sale for 329 and everywhere else they are 400.
I am just worried it is an older model or something and there have been significant changes from the older to the newer models.

If you think $329 is a good deal, check out the Octopus NW200 at $190. It's an 8" skimmer that is also 24" tall. The Octopus thread has been split now three times and there are waaay too many satisfied users. I'll say no more.
