View Full Version : How to control waste without inverts?

I just put two triggers in my reef. I know that they will eventually decimate my snails and hermits, but I was wondering how to clean the sandbed without doing water changes every few days. Do I need real strong water motion? Is there an invert that the triggers won't eat?

What kind of triggers did you add to your reef?

I have done real well with lots of water flow and a U.V. light. I have tried snails and crabs, but they get eaten up real quick (triggers love crabs).

Lots of flow, a refugium and a big skimmer. Ths combination will hook you up. I also run a 57 watt aqua UV and a phosban reactor with Rowa.

Here's how I run my FOWLR.

Thanks!

But there's always room for improvement! ;)

That setup is out of my league! I hope someday to get that efficient. I appreciate the advice.

Refuge with chaeto is a good idea.

My triggers and gunea fowl puffer could not get to mexican turbo snails - the bigger the better. They learn to come out at night if they want less harassment. The do fine for me, but don't like too high of nitrates or phoshpated, which might be unavoidable in some tanks.

i second the extra large turbos. my trigger and puffer can't get to them. btw, just to be clear, snails help with algae, but not "waste"... i'd say a good skimmer is all you need for that.

I've got a good skimmer and a fuge with macro and live rock. Has anyone ever bought one of those large hermit crabs that are about 4"? I was thinking about adding one of those bad boys.
