skimmer question

i have had my skimmer in my system fo about a month and a half... i have gotten some stuff out of it but not a lot.....is this normal? also what is it "skimming"

What kind of skimmer are we talking about here? If its a cheapo skimmer then you are not going to get much out of it at all.
