Does anyone else have a problem with cat hair getting into their aquariums? I have an egg crate top due to heat from my HQIs, and I can't go back to the glass tops...
We have 4 cats, getting rid of them in OUT OF THE QUESTION. What should I do about the fur getting into the aquarium?

Is the tank right under a HVAC vent? May want to look into a better filter for your air conditioner (to trap more hair)

Yeah how do you have cat hair getting that high into your aquarium? As a previous person mentioned it must be getting blown around through your house vents. If this is the case then you have got some SERIOUS cat hair. I dont know what else to do except manually scoop it out or move the tank to a different location.

I agree with this above statement and purchase a high quality(can be pricey / but worth it) filter from your local heating & air company to improve your indoor air quality. I worked for a HCAV company for 5 years(here in FL where the air is ALL MESSED UP) And this is one of the best filters money can buy, not mention, you only replace them ONCE A YEAR...

And if you want to really improve the air you breath(or your fish)have your ductwork cleaned out, Space Gard filter put in, and a UV light system for your furnace or airhandler. ;)

Do you have a conopy. I have 3 big house dogs. Ibuilt a canopy to go above my topless tank and placed Glass on the top. I used 1X4 wood and did not plain in order to let natural light allow water to evaporate to keep tank cooler. Hope this helps.

I live in FL and we have 3 cats ... We use one of those hepa filters we change out once a month for our A\C but as far as the cats go I might recommend thecatsite.com where there are forums you might find about them shedding..

If you are willing to do maintainance on the tank than it should go hand in hand with maintainance on your cat- regular, daily brushings (and emptying the brush straight into the trashbin) should reallllly cut down on the hairs getting into the tank.

I've had a few go in because I found one of my cats likes to play in a water change bucket .. which i've convinced him not to anymore but it doesn't really just fly around the room unless im petting them.. Which i don't do near the tank.

Get one of those finer comb brushes it tends to really grab the hair- and if you're using a plastic crate I can imagine if there is hair floating in the air that static would want to make the hair stick to it- even more reason to brush often!

I don’t think its so much has any thing to do with the a/c filter and what not
I have the same problem the hair gets in form me putting my hands in and the cat checking out all my boxes and buckets that I keep my stuff in just make sure before you use the stuff you give it a good shake or rinse it

That’s the problem I have it may not apply to you

"Shave the cats LOL Just kidding"

We do actually!!! They are long haired cats that we have shaved in a lion cut, lol. They usually do that for himalayans, but I just can't deal with the tumbleweeds of hair rolling around the house, even though I'm a constant vaccumer!!!

Mr. Furious, moving the tank is not an option. I vaccuum constantly, but with the fans always on in the summer, cat hair blows everywhere, just like dust.

Fishy Business, This house is less that 6 months old, and my husband put the ductwork in himself. After our last house, where they contracted someone to do the ducts, and later we found wrappers and beer cans in there, he did the whole house himself :-) This really has nothing to do with the quality of air or air conditioner/duct work in our home.

Techrach & Ti, a glass canopy is out of the question, as I stated above, the halide lights are too hot for any sort of cover besides egg crate.

I was just wondering if maybe someone used a surface skimmer or something like that and could recommend one. It mostly floats on the top. Also, would a hepa filter suck in the cat hair?? That may be something I would be interested in, as long as it actually attracted the fur.

I have 3 cats and haven't had a problem. I have electric heat so the cat hairs don't get blown around.

Sure it's cat hair? I had what I thought was cat hair... turns out it was a snail that lives in a tube on LR, and shoots out a sticky thread to catch floaters in the water...

My cat likes it very warm and sleeps on the pc ballasts that are in the canopy above the reef. Cat hairs work their way into the aquarium but seems to have no effect on the system. The hairs float and are removed by the filters.

I have a Oreck air purifier that had an ionizer on it. It actually makes dust and hair go to the ground. http://www.oreck.com/

We have 2 cats, 2 dogs, 75g tank, 37g cube, club frag tank, sump and 10g hospital tank with no problems at all with hair. Only the 75g has a canopy, the rest are open tops.

Hey, what about cat hair getting into the sump? Anyone have a problem with that?

Just use a filter sock and replace it twice/week. I have 2 dogs and don't notice hair in the tank too often but when I wash the sock, there is always hair in it. The trick is to change the sock before it gets clogged and water overflows from the top of it, which in my tank is after about a week. That'll just put hair everywhere.
