What skimmer?

Can get a used Euroreef CS8-2 Skimmer for $300. Think it comes with Sedra 5000

ASM G4+ with gate valve mod and sedra 9000 pump for $430 new?

What to do?

I would go with the euro. Better quality.

I would go with asm comes with sedra 9000 great skimmer can stand side by side with a euro.I have had both and the euro is a good skimmer but high priced

asm just as good better price

how big is your tank

07/20/2006, 12:59 AM
180 gallon

07/20/2006, 01:12 AM
I was talking on average. If you plan on up grading later to bigger tank go with the g4x if not then the euro...

07/20/2006, 01:15 AM
Ok, Sorry.

I will not be upgrading. I will just be keeping the 180.

So the Euroreef is plenty of skimmer?

07/20/2006, 01:32 AM
I can vouch for ASM skimmers. they work fantastic for me.

rated for 350 gallons should be good to go with a 180 a little over the top but but you have room to grow..lol

I have a g-3 on my 125 and its is by far the best skimmer i have used. I would definately recommend it. I would also recommend the re-circ mod for the asm

BTW the skimmer that the g-3 replaced.... a euro reef rs-250

Dang, so tough.

I like the fact that The Euroreef is made with better quality plastics.

BUt like the fact that the ASM is new and has a bigger pump. But, that pump uses 90Watts, OUCH

tough choice, good question. new pump biger skimmer more money vs old pump better smaller skimmer cheeper, $430 vs $300

go ASM G4 X (30" model) 45% more money, 65% more skimmer
asm G4 plus (24" model) 40% more money, 50% more skimmer

i like Octopus- nw 200 50% more skimmer than the ER, $100 less money IMO.

I am getting an ASM G3 on my new 72 gallon.

If those are the two you are torn between, why not also throw in the Octopus NW 150 (6" body x 23" tall 530gph pump) or NW200 (8" body x 24" tall 790gph pump). Same design, less money and kicks serious Wrasse. They also make recirc versions that don't require you to cut holes in your skimmer with a hole saw like ASM does. Octopus Skimmers and Pacific Coast Imports skimmers are the same skimmers made in the same factory. However, the PCI skimmers sell for more money. They use Octopus Turbo pumps which are made side by side with Ocean Runner pumps.

I would do the ER & then just look for another needlewheel pump to add to it to make it a RC skimmer

I have a G3 & a RC500 & the ER is a much better unit, easier to use/clean

I was impressed with those chinese skimmers when I saw them

agree with viggen. buy the Er. sell the sedra 5000 for $50 and buy a 9000. better quality and now same pump. middle price.

I know that an ER skimmer definitely has better quality than an ASM, but do you really need the quality?

Is there an ASM or ER skimmer out there that has been cracked or broken during normal usage? Let's leave the pump out because it is from the same manufacturer. I have never heard of a skimmer breaking or cracked during normal usage. So if it is not going to break on you, does it matter if it is cast or extruded, prettier, etc.? It is there to remove fish poo.

I have used an ASM G-3 but I sold it and got a much bigger used ER. The ASM was really good but I needed a bigger skimmer. I just got the ER because it was the biggest thing that would fit under my stand, and it was cheap.

thanks for all the replys!

I'm going with, Drum roll please

correct, many times the quality of the materiels etc doesn't really matter, it's int he actual design of the skimmer, size of pump & size of the skimmer :)

Some people prefer it over the ER's but what I hate about my ASM is how the collection cup is removed. It is quicker then my ER if it doesn't get hung up however it never comes off w/o a snag. Same with the top of the cup where it likes to stick to the cup body making it a PITA to remove.

Well just like my typical self i think i have finally made my decision from some PM help:)

Think i'm actually going with the Euroreef RS180 with SP4 pump.

This Pump only uses 45Watts and i have heard its awesome.

07/20/2006, 08:51 PM
Dont think you could go wrong with either skimmer.

07/20/2006, 08:53 PM
I love my ASM, but both a super skimmers! I would go with the bigger pump... More micro bubbles.
