I am going to be setting up a tank soon, and would like to stock it with a single trigger. I am looking at a 40 Long, 48x13x16. My stocking will be SPS corals, and plenty of nassarius snails (willing to replenish periodically if trigger snacks on them).
This will be a high flow tank, which I felt would help the trigger stay healthy. Right now, I am looking at a Female Blue Jaw Trigger. I really want a Crosshatch, but can't seem to find them for less than $400. I think I'd be able to get my LFS to get me a 1" specimen.
Does it sound like it will work?
Thanks,
Kevin

i wouldn't do it. thats just to small of a tank. why not get something smaller that won't create a huge bioload or outgrow your tank.

Okay. Just thought I MIGHT get away with it.
How would a single Dispar Anthias be?

On the other hand, what is the smallest recommended for a Blue Jaw? LiveAquaria recommends no less than 70.

blue jaws are open ocean swimmers. they need a large tank with lots of swimming space. id say 120g.

Get a pair of Maroon Clownfish. Perfect tank size. These grow to 6". They might breed for you some day, plus you get to watch them inhabit your corals. Also they are aggressive as far as Clowns go. They are probably the most agressive Clownfish, and they will not tolerate other kinds of Clowns. Pairs take some work to form too. Once you get two that will peacefully live together then you are set. Plus they are beautiful. They are Maroon with gold Stripes...(most of them have Gold stripes).

an undulated trigger could work if it were the only inhabitant.

Yeah, Foster & Smith say an Undulate alone in a 40 is good.

I agree. An undulate would be a good choice for a tank that size. I don't know about undulates and corals though. In general I think they would be okay but the trigger may on occasion take a bite....but the snails will be history.
Don't do a sandbed, instead go BB and put a powerhead down to blow under/around the rockwork...it will keep the tank cleaner that way. You will need all the help you can get because triggers are rather messy and you want to keep SPS corals so.....
You're going to need a good skimmer too.

I have something to add to the last reply. I kept my Picasso trigger in a 33 long (It's a 4 foot tank). I had some mushrooms in there with him. The cool thing was that if I placed the food correctly when I fed him, as he was chewing it up he also fed my mushrooms. He did not bother them at all.

I will take the SPS over the trigger, but I would really love one. An undulate would be great, but....are there any other varieties available? This fish will be ALONE in this tank.
I have the skimmer+etc. figured out.

Id go with a small Blue Throat. I had one for about a year in my 55g. When I got it it was about 2-2.5" and when I sold her(b/c she was starting to show aggression) she was 3.5. Great fish, amazing personality and would eat anything I put in the tank!!

If the fish is only an inch long right now, I would say you can get by with it for a year or so. But you would have to be ready to upgrade. So like I said if you could budget for a larger tank in the future I would say you can get by with it for now. I 4 foot long tank gives them plenty of space to swim around.
I like Triggers

when a fish is put into a tank that is too small, it will stunt it's growth. that is unhealthy in the longrun for the fish and puts stress on it. in a year it should have grown much more than an inch, especially starting at 2-2.5". for example, i have had my humu for 16 months and he has grown at least 4"-4.5"
