I am pretty sure it is an urchin, although I am not sure what type. I just found it yesterday. It is about half of an inch across.

It is a "Rock Boring Urchin" It's a good guy that usually stays well hidden in the rocks. Their only down side is that they are extremely strong and tend to cause avalanches in unsecure Rock Scaping.

Is that the one that's also called a 'pencil urchin'?

Is that the one that's also called a 'pencil urchin'? No, the pencils have thicker less pointy spines and they arn't as strong as the Rock Boring urchins.
