The last few mornings I have been getting up extra early, 6am. When I come in and turn on my actinics I noticed my jawfish which usually has a ver dark black head, has white specks all over him, and looks as though he has paled.
Worried I have been feeding him right off the bat, but when he comes out of his hole a ways and starts eating the white disappears, and his head becomes black again.
So, can a Jawfish change color? the only other thing I could think of is he is sticking sand to his face? The white specks he gets are the same color as the sand.

I think many fish can do this. My hippo tang looks like a ghost when the lights first come on, as does the yellow. However, they quickly color up as they come out of thier night time resting holes... I wouldn't be worried.

I have no experience with jaw fish but I know my valintni puffer which is yellow, black and white goes grey when he sleeps and goes back to regular color when he wakes. As for the spots are they only there when he loses his color?
