I have a 1 1/2" PVC overflow which always made the usual flushing toilet sound. I didn't have room in the overflow box for the typical Durso submerged drain using a "T" and an Elbow so I put up with it for a couple of years. I was recently looking at the durso system and realized that I could get the same function with a circular drain. I used a PVC cap that was about 1 inch bigger in ID than the OD of the drain. I glued three little "L" shaped pvc spacers inside the cap to hold it centered on the drain and the underside spaced 1/2 inch above the top of the drain. I drilled a 3/16" inch hole in the center for the air bleed. Now I sit the modified cap on top of the drain pipe and voila - SILENCE!
The advantage is you only need about 1/2 to 3/4" clearance around the drain pipe. If anyone is interested and needs more detail let me know.
