Randy,

Just trying to understand something. In Part II of your iron articles (http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/oct2002/chem.htm) there are a couple of seemingly contradictory statements (or probably I'm just not understanding).

First you say:
In IRONEX II, for example, diatoms accounted for 17% of the biomass growth prior to iron enrichment, and 79% after iron addition. In this test, in fact, diatoms experienced a 70x increase in population. If I understand this correctly, iron enrichment increased the growth of diatoms. But then in the summary you say:6. Diatoms may begin to grow more rapidly if they are iron-limited in reef tanks. This sounds like the opposite of the above statement. What am I missing?

The second statement is from a list of possible effects of adding iron to the tank. So we can rephrase the second statement to:

"If iron is supplemented into the tank, diatoms may begin to grow more rapidly, if they were iron-limited before supplementation."

I see now. THANKS!:)
