How many of you use Mechanical filtering in your sump?

I have filter floss at the top of the sump where my water runs in.

Basic setup is a flooded wet/dry filter, in other words a wet filter lol.

I have to change the floss out about every two week otherwise everything starts to get dirty.
Does anyone else do this or let everything go to their skimmer for removal (if it get there and not right back into the tank)?

I'll take a picture of my sump tomorrow and post it.

That I know of most everyone will not use it except for maybe a filter sock on occasion like after a water change.

Here is my sump. Do others use filtering like this?

I plan on redoing the sump and add more baffles, take out the bio balls, and drilling the tank to move the return pump to the out side.

I do something similar in my sump -- there's water passing through a carbon/poly filter. You do need to change the media every couple of weeks, including the carbon, to prevent it from becoming a nitrate producing biofilter.
